Message from the Superintendent

February is Black History Month.  Each year there is the theme for the month, this year it is “2015 - A Century of Black Life, History, and Culture.”  Our Social Studies Department will be incorporating Black History month themes within their lessons and using pull out time to highlight key figures in American history.  Social Studies teachers will be customizing a PowerPoint, titled “People Who Have Changed America: Greatness in Black History,” for each area in which they teach.  In addition, students will also be introduced to primary & multimedia sources to further the experience.

February 16th marks our recognition of Presidents’ Day. Our History Club will be redesigning the Social Studies bulletin board ranking all 44 presidents from Great to Disappointment.

Additionally, February 19th is Chinese New Year – Year of the Sheep.  Also, on February 20, 1962, John Glenn became the first person to orbit the Earth in the Friendship 7 space capsule.

Important MRHS events in February, 2015 are:

Best-Seller Visits Manchester:  On February 4th, New York Times Best-Selling author Tina Kelley will visit Manchester and discuss her award winning novel Almost Home with all Manchester students.  Kelley’s novel describes the harrowing impact that poverty and homelessness have on the lives of American teenagers.  Almost Home masterfully blends statistics and data with personal narrative in order to give the reader the full scope as to the true impact that homelessness has on our nation.  All Manchester students will attend one of Tina Kelley’s five workshops and the members of our Falcon Book Club will be able to join Ms. Kelley for a special luncheon in the library.

County Tournament Round Two:  On Saturday February 7th, the boys’ basketball team will be hosting a second round game in the Passaic County tournament.  The boys are playing at a very high level this year and have proudly earned a record of 12-2 this year.  This is the first time in recent memory that the boys’ basketball team has been seeded high enough in the county tournament to warrant a second round home game.  Good luck, boys!

Best Practice Anti-Bullying Solutions:  On Monday February 9th, Manchester Regional High School will work together with staff members from the North Haledon School District to review best practices concerning The Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights Act.  The districts will review best practice solutions aimed at improving both the climate and culture of schools and investigating Harassment, Intimidation, and Bullying claims.

Literacy Coach:  On February 12th, Ms. Celeste Denman will be meeting with all of the English teachers at Manchester to work on skills such as standards based education and differentiated instruction.  Ms. Denman is the newest member of the Regional Achievement Center.  Her energy, passion, and instructional knowledge have proven to be quite impressive thus far and we are excited to continue working with her so that we can continually improve the language arts education that we provide to our students.

Movie Night at Manchester:  The class of 2016 will have a movie night in the auditorium at Manchester on Friday February 27th.  The class will pay homage to Black History Month by showing a film that focuses on themes that are pertinent to African American history.  This looks to be a great night for the students to come together and explore an important part of our nation’s history.

PARCC Blitz:  Football season may be over but Manchester grade 9, 10, and 11 students will be gearing up to prepare for the PARCC exam that will begin its first phase in March.  English and mathematics departments have identified the “anchor standards” that we believe will serve as the focus for the PARCC assessments and these specific skills will be deeply developed in English and mathematics classes this month.

February Break:  Manchester will begin its February Break as classes will be closed February 16th-20th.  The school will be open for athletic and extra-curricular activities.  Furthermore, the main office and guidance offices will be open during this recess.
