Technical Essentials:

URL

 = Web address
(Uniform Resource Locator)

If you know the URL, you can access the site from any computer with Internet access. URLs within a Web page are links to other sites; they appear in blue script and are underlined).

Domains:

.edu ; .com ; .org ; net; ~
(=extension of a URL)

Bookmarks

Save good sites in "Bookmarks" on your local hard drive. The bookmark itself is a link. You can also copy your bookmarks to a floppy disk.

Located on your tool bar.
Bookmarks can be filed in folders of your choice.

(Netscape only! In Microsoft's Internet Explorer use "Favorites")

Cut + Paste

Open "Word" behind Netscape.
Highlight desired text or URL.

Cut = Ctrl + C
-go to word and
Paste = Ctrl +V

Copy Pictures

Right click on picture. Go to "Save As". Save it in a picture folder in your file.

 

Insert Pictures

Place the cursor in the document where you want the picture. Go to "Insert" on your toolbar. Go to "Picture". Go to "from File". Find and highlight the desired picture file in your folder. Click “Insert”.

Research Assignment

General Tasks

Electronic Outline
Eliminates wasting time with aimless searching and surfing - focuses students on task.

Teacher

Selects topic, plans format and scope of project. Requires the use of  both print and electronic resources.

Provides printed outline for requirements to students.

Types out project requirements in "Word" (saved in HTML format). Links useful URLs if known. Saves project on disk and gives it to librarian.

Librarian

Prepares print bibliography for teachers and on request for students.

Reviews catalog searching skills.

Searches for best sites related to research. Adds them as links to project and enhances project page upon request. Makes class project accessible on WEB.

Will teach Internet search techniques for specific search engines, when students are required to do their own searching.

Student

Follows project requirements as outlined on print and/or web instructions. Uses catalog to find print materials

 

Students can access assignment page from home or on school computers. The links provide quick access to pre-selected sites. Format of project will require student to evaluate information rather than simply gather and restate facts. Student will use informed search skills, when searching on his own.
