Congratulations Educational Specialist of the Year!

Julie Mahan received her undergraduate degree in Human Development and Family Studies from the University of Rhode Island, and her Master’s Degree in Social Work from Yeshiva University’s Wurzweiler School of Social Work. Mrs. Mahan has been a member of the MRHS faculty since September 2012.

As the behavior specialist, she creates and supports the implementation of Positive Behavior Supports and behavior modification programs for the student body. As a Case Manager for the Child Study team, Mrs. Mahan is responsible for providing mandated counseling and social skills programming for classified students and acts as an advocate for them.  In addition, she is part of the 504 and I&RS committees and is available for teacher consultation and student support on an as-needed basis. Mrs Mahan is the district trainer for Handle with Care, a behavior management protocol that ensures student safety. Mrs. Mahan believes that the key to supporting the social, emotional and educational growth of students is to lead by example. Modeling self-care, appropriate social skills,  and recognizing natural honest emotions and maintaining appropriate boundaries is what guides her daily interactions with students and staff.

In addition to her role as the district Behavior Specialist, Mrs. Mahan has a private practice specializing in work with children and families since 2010. In her free time, Mrs Mahan enjoys going to the beach and Disney World with her children, Lawler (5), Lincoln (2) and her husband, Thor.
